You and the Law

“YOU and the Law”

Legal Clinic

This five week program will be offered on Thursday afternoons for five consecutive weeks beginning October 4, 2012.   Each session consists of two hour presentations from 1:30 pm. until 3:30 pm.  Topics range from issues related to housing, small claims court, wills and estates, powers of attorneys, consumer protection – and many others.  You can attend one, two or all the sessions!

Clinic Staff are very pleased by the numbers of people interested in taking advantage of this informal yet informative course.  In order to accommodate greater numbers, the course is held in the Board room on the third floor of the ELNOS BUILDING.  This location allows for larger numbers and also provides flexibility for those who wish to attend specific sessions of their choosing and interest.

Areas covered include:

What is administrative law?  How does it differ from civil law or criminal law?

What are my rights as a renter?

How does Small Claims court work?

Why do I need a will?

What is a Power of Attorney?

What do I do when collection companies come “pounding on my door”?

What is a cooling off period?

What is elder crime?

What is the office of the public guardian?

Should my bridge club become incorporated?

You can participate in this program for free. Not only is the price right, but information provided by the presenters serves to “arm” our population with information and strategies.

The Legal Clinic has been part of the Elliot Lake and North Shore community since 1991.  We have witnessed over the years many people being taken advantage of by unscrupulous salespeople and contractors.  We have seen the devastation that results from citizens who are ill equipped or wrongly informed about matters that affect their lives and their ability to function independently.  Our commitment to try and respond to these issues continues and this program is just another facet of our community strategy.

As well, contact with Legal Clinic staff creates a climate whereby citizens can identify and create comfort for themselves when seeking assistance or legal advice through our office.
