Seniors and the Law - Learning in Retirement

You may have heard about this course!...
Staff at the Elliot Lake and North Shore Community Legal Clinic have completed their third presentation of this course called “Seniors and the Law”.

This five week program runs on Thursday mornings for five consecutive weeks and each session consists of two hour presentations from 10:00 am until noon.  Topics range from issues related to housing, small claims court, wills and estates, powers of attorneys, consumer protection – and many others.

Staff at the Legal clinic are encouraged by the numbers of seniors taking advantage of this informal yet informative course.  Each week one of the three – and sometimes all three staff persons at the clinic provide the “basic” legal framework on a topic or topics of interest.  These topics generate a lively and enthusiastic response from listeners and questions and comments flow freely between participants and clinic staff.  Questions include:

What is administrative law?  How does it differ from civil law or criminal law?
What are my rights as a renter?
How does Small Claims court work?
Why do I need a will?
What is a Power of Attorney?
What do I do when collection companies come “pounding on my door”?
What is a cooling off period?
What is elder crime?
What is the office of the public guardian?
Should my bridge club become incorporated?

This program cost $5.00 for each participant.  Not only is the price right, but information provided by the presenters serves to “arm” our senior population with information and strategies that will serve to empower them in their senior years.

The Legal Clinic has been part of the Elliot Lake and North Shore community since 1991.  We have witnessed over the years many seniors being taken advantage of by unscrupulous salespeople and contractors.  We have seen the devastation that results from seniors who are ill equipped or wrongly informed about matters that affect their lives and their ability to function independently.  Our commitment to try and respond to these issues continues and this program is just another facet of our community strategy.

As well, the contact with Legal Clinic staff creates a climate whereby seniors can identify and create comfort for themselves when seeking assistance or legal advice through our office.

The program continues in February, 2010.  Clinic Staff will offer the same five week program beginning February 4, 2010.
